A good USB to Serial cable to use with the PTC Explorer is the Iogear GUC232A or the Aten UC232A which uses the same NEW drivers.
Other cables should work but very OLD Prolific drivers have caused system crashes on Win98 and WinXP when disconnecting from a Kiln.

Note: Install the following Drivers First as ADMINISTRATOR and REBOOT the PC if necessary BEFORE plugging in the cable.
Change the Port to COM1 in Device Manager, Advanced Settings ignoring warnings if there are no other serial ports in the PC or to COM2 or COM3 if there are one or two REAL native ports.
On WIN 8 LAPTOPS with a VIRTUAL COM Port change the VIRTUAL Port to COM 5 or higher and set the USB to Serial Port to COM 1.
Unplug the cable then plug it back in to ensure Device Manager recognizes the new port assignment.
If you change USB ports FORCE the COM assignment in Device Manager again to use the SAME port number as before, and IGNORE any warnings about multiple assignments.
Change the Serial Port in PTC Explorer Farm 1 PROPERTIES to the correct port.

NOTE: CUT OFF M1 by J15 and MOV1 by Q12 near J13 if the system is wired for communications or the kiln has a poor ground connection and no ground rods.
This reduces the system's susceptibility to induced ground noise and eliminates communication dropouts and AQUA chattering.
